Nanomaterials Is Danger To Humans With Asbestos Risk
Nanotechnology is a new science that promises great improvements in many materials — for example, more strength, flexibility and durability to plastics and metals. Some scientists, however, demand caution, because the effects upon the body of extremely small components, in this science are not known.
The fight for the use of asbestos because of its ability, long-term and fatal disease in humans for decades. Given that many nanomaterials are roughly similar or even smaller — — asbestos fibers in bulk, it only makes sense to test what happens to human tissue, when to them. Asbestos has been considered a “miracle” material — its flexibility and flame retardant properties are a common ingredient in hundreds of materials.
But the toll in human suffering through the unbridled use of asbestos in industry is only the beginning felt. Given that the incidence of mesothelioma continues to increase, costs for workers and their families, 30, 40 and 50 years later was tragic. It would be criminal, begins with another substance, the same capacity to infect humans with long-term illness and / or death.
A recent study compared the results of the human epithelial cells were of two types of nanomaterials (small fragments of matter in the field of nanotechnology) and asbestos fibers. Epithelial cells are the cells in the panels and the cavities of the organs (lungs, abdomen, etc.), which starts and develops mesothelioma.
The results of the study showed that a form of nanoparticles have to slow down cell activity but not that lead to more cells to die. But others (soot) of nanotubes does not seem to adversely affect the cells. However, these two types of chrysotile asbestos fibers and crocidolite — — be deep into the cells, to slow or stop the normal activity of the cell and causes cell death (apoptosis).
It is tempting to conclude that all nanomaterials are not as dangerous as asbestos, but this study clearly shows, there were negative effects of the nanotubes, even if it does not seem to be in human tissues. It is important for citizens about the science responsible for respect of discharges in our lives. The objective of tests of nanomaterials are a sign that some scientists, at least maintain the public good at the forefront of their work.
