Despite the known fact that Wittenoom is responsible for many deaths, there are those who are reluctant to ban tourists from visiting the city. It is undeniable that the residents still living there, to feel the emotional and financial stress due to a lack of tourism, but when I saw an article in The West Australian Wednesday, May 19, with the title “The city does dies, “and I was shocked by the way, one in the city, explaining that he had lived in Wittenoom since 1966 and that to his knowledge, had nothing mesothelioma this time, had died in anger.
Nobody should be complacent or comfortable in the knowledge that thirty-eight years have passed without incidence of mesothelioma in Whittenoom because it is a known fact that many years may spend between inhalation of asbestos dust and it is deadly legacy of mesothelioma.
“I was realized in a tragic way, when my husband was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2001 was a result of that, he lived in Wittenoom for a few months as a child. Forty-five years between his inhalation of asbestos dust and passed his diagnosis.
For my part I can not think of Wittenoom without pain. He is my husband and his father, and much closer in the years to come and live to die as a result of that. Nobody who witnessed the destruction of this terrible disease and may have lost relatives through empathy for Wittenoom. It’s always a killer that once the dust is inhaled into the lungs tainted, without warning, until she met and there is no hope, no cure against this terrible disease.
For residents who want to stay, it’s their choice. However, encourage and help tourists to visit Wittenoom, knowing full well the dangers of inhaling asbestos dust is irresponsible as the mining company that has created this monster and refused to function, even if they close their existence consciously .
Wittenoom may well be a picturesque place to live for the rest of the residents? For me, it reflects a massive graveyard with all the loved ones who died and had completed the pain in my heart for all those who lost. I would like to see wiped off the map forever.
